FLUTE

What is the best age to start?

The flute is a very versatile instrument. It has a large and varied repertoire of music, encompassing jazz to classical genres, and is written for everything from solo to orchestral groups.

In traditional music study
(as opposed to the Suzuki approach) there is a definite correlation between learning to read the written word and learning to read music.  Therefore flute study is best begun when a child is begginning to read.

The flute is very popular in schools, as it is an affordable instrument, which can be used in bands, ensembles and orchestras.  As a melodic instrument, the flute is not difficult to master. Yet if approached seriously, flute study can take a student through the elective music courses at school, right through to university level.

Flute vs Recorder

If a student is struggling with the embouchure or a flute is simply too expensive then recorder is a good alternative.
Recorders are inexpensive, easy to play and their fingering is largely the same as flute.  They don't have the same range or flexibility in their expression as the flute but they are still a beautiful sounding instrument.  They serve as a great introduction into both music and the woodwind family.
