ACCOUSTIC GUITAR

The best age to start

Picture
Accoustic (rhythm) guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn.
Basic chord shapes, strumming and finger picking patterns can be mastered in a matter of months, (with a committed student), and form the basis of many other contemporary guitar styles, such as lead, jazz, blues, country, bluegrass, etc.

While conceptually, rhythm guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn, physically it requires a degree of strength which means that it can prove difficult for a very young beginnier.

The early stages of finding chords on the fretboard also produce some discomfort. Once callouses begin to form, the discomfort disappears. However the very young beginner can find the discomfort of the early stages of learning difficult to ignore, and will sometimes give away the instrument altogether.

Many teachers agree that around the age of eight is a good age to start. Depending on the build of the student, a 3/4 size guitar may also be in order.
